Fantastic work. Glad that you took the input serious. It would be nice to hear more about you did this tesselation. I received all articles from Douglas Hofstaedter. Very interesting stuff, too.

There are some better images of these on my flickr, where I fixed the kinks in the octagons, and tried using them as folding patterns.
I loved ‘Godel Escher Bach’, but havent read any of Hofstaedter’s other work – I must check it out.
